Preference Services - TPS, MPS, FPS
Members of the public can opt out of receiving unsolicited calls, mail and faxes by adding their details to the appropriate preference services. The Leadline database audit will tell you how many of your contacts belong to each service.
Telephone Preference Service (TPS)
It is a legal requirement that companies do not call numbers registered with the TPS
The TPS is uncompromising and states "it is unlawful to make unsolicited direct marketing calls to individuals who have indicated that they do not want to receive such calls". The TPS file is updated daily and you must screen your consumer data against the file to avoid the possibility of incurring a fine.
The service was launched in 1995 and currently (May 07) 14,813,829 UK consumer telephone numbers are registered with the TPS, and there is a current daily increase of 5,594 numbers.

Mailing Preference Service (MPS)
Started in 1993, the MPS offers a way for consumers to register to be removed from any direct mailing lists in the UK. It is not a legal requirement for data to be screened against the MPS but it is good practice. This saves potential bad feedback from any contacts who have registered with the MPS to avoid being the recipients of direct mail.
There are currently (May 07) 3,441,836 UK consumer addresses registered with the MPS and the average monthly increase is 52,243 addresses.

Fax Preference Services (FPS)
It is a legal requirement that companies do not send faxes to numbers registered with the FPS
This service is compiled from a list of businesses and home based businesses that don't want to receive unsolicited faxes.
There are currently (May 07) 1,917,556 UK fax numbers registered with the FPS and the average daily increase is 213.
